Joseph "Joe" Raymond Brown, 87, of Charlotte died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000 at Westwing Place, DeWitt.

Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, DeWitt. Burial was in the Assumption Cemetery, Charlotte.

Visitation was Friday, 3-8 p.m. at the Schultz Funeral Home in DeWitt, where a Rosary was recited at 4 p.m. and a scripture service was held at 7 p.m. Cunnick-Collins Mortuary in Davenport was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Brown was born March 3, 1913, in Charlotte to Roy and Rosa Maloney Brown. He married Margaret "Margie" Ruddy in July of 1981 at the Alverno Care Center in Clinton.

He was retired from farming and also had worked as an equipment operator with the Midwest Operating Engineers No. 537.

In his earlier years he earned his pilot's license in St. Louis, Mo. He performed as a rodeo cowboy at Madison Square Garden in New York City as well as riding in other various rodeos throughout the country.

He held and sponsored the Charlotte Rodeo and was a member of the Charlotte Trail Riders Association and the DeWitt Knights of Columbus. He organized many trail rides.

Survivors include his wife of DeWitt; stepsons, John Smith of Itasca, Ill., and James Smith of Bartlett, Ill.

He was preceded in death by a half-sister, a brother and a half-brother.
