Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, LaMotte.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

LAMOTTE — Merlin “Pete” Herrig, 79, of LaMotte, died Monday at his home.

Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, LaMotte. Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Oct. 19, 1926, in LaMotte, to Joseph and Lena Ties Herrig. He married Lyda Berthel on Aug. 24, 1948, at St. John's Catholic Church in Andrew.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He farmed in the LaMotte area for more than 20 years. He also worked in construction, ending his career working in the maintenance department at Mercy Medical Center for 10 years.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Parish, Knights of Columbus Post 9236 and American Legion Post of Bellevue. He was a 4-H leader for many years.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Don Herrig of Dubuque; two daughters, Marilyn (Mel) Berendes of Dubuque and Phyllis (Tim) Chantos of DeWitt; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Evelyn (Melvin) Lenz of LaMotte.
