Wesley Edward Witte

Mr. Wesley Edward Witte, 88, DeWitt, Iowa, died early Wednesday morning, March 8, 2006 at Westwing Place, DeWitt.

He was born October 3, 1917 in Wheatland, Iowa, to J. Edward and Amanda (Thiede) Witte. Wesley attended elementary and high school in Phoenix, Arizona, and received his degree in business administration from the University of Arizona at Tucson in 1940. During World War II, as a navigator, he flew “The Hump” (India to China) and parachuted from his disabled airplane over the Himalaya Mountains. Wesley later flew the North Atlantic. On October 12, 1946, he married Audrey Beer at Saint Peter Lutheran Church in New York City.

Wesley returned to Iowa in 1949 and later founded Witte Ready Mix Concrete Company. He was a Director on the boards of First Central State Bank, DeWitt Chamber of Commerce, F & B Telephone Company and DeWitt Development Company. Wesley was a member of DeWitt Noon Lions Club, a fifty-year Master Mason, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Kaaba Shriner. He was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Clinton, Iowa.

Surviving are his wife, Audrey and children, Mark Witte, wife Marsha, DeWitt, The Reverend Marilyn Witte, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Dianne Witte, husband, Richard Ford, New Haven, Connecticut, and Craig Witte, wife Jana, DeWitt; grandchildren, Ann Witte LaPoint, Littleton, Colorado, Ellen Witte, Iowa City, Iowa, and Steven and Brian Witte, DeWitt; a sister, Natalie Deeming, Tucson, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Clinton, Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at 11 a.m. The Reverend Elizabeth Liggett officiating. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials to Saint Paul Lutheran Church, designated for Habitat for Humanity.

His body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Department of Anatomy.
