Veronica M. Murphy

Veronica M. Murphy, age 96 of Clinton, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday 10:30 AM at the Prince of Peace Parish — Sacred Heart Church. Visitation will be held Thursday 4-8 PM at the Pape Funeral Home with a vigil service to be held at 4 PM. Burial will be at St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons, Steven Cooper, Craig Murphy, Brent Schrader, William and Jeffrey Taplin, Victor Mensavage and Jason Taplin. Honorary pallbearers will be her remaining grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Veronica was born on Feb. 10, 1910 in Villanova Township, Clinton County, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Loretta (Naughton) McDevitt. She was educated in the DeWitt Schools.

She married Carl P. Murphy on Jan. 23, 1929 in DeWitt, IA, he died in 1970. Veronica was employed with Albert’s Jewelers and The Lou Marge Shoppe, prior to retiring in 1973. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish, the D.C.C.W., and past president of the PTA at St. Irenaeus Schools. She served on the board of the Ladies Auxiliary of Mercy Hospital. She was active with the Clinton Knee-Hi Drum and Bugle Corp. She was very interested in genealogy and researched and recorded her family history.

Veronica is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Shirley (Edward) Cooper of Mesa, AZ and Judith Murphy of Clinton, with whom she made her home; a son, Gary (Karen) Murphy of Camanche; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Arleta (Donald) Murphy of Clinton; two sisters, Mrs. Kay (Alvin) Koenes and Mrs. Mildred (Gerald) Drummond both of Davenport; a brother, Cleo “Mac” (Irene “Tootie”) McDevitt of Clinton; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Carl in 1970, a son, Donald in 1997, three sisters, and a brother.

Veronica will forever be in the hearts of everyone she touched.
