I am seeking information (e.g., date of death, obituary) about my great great grandparents S.H. James and Eliza J. (Dow) James. His biography is at p. 1045 of the History of Clayton County, Iowa (1982.)
I am also seeking information about my great great grandmother, Orpha DePue. The 1882 history states that she and her husband Austin (listed as A.T. De Pugh) settled in Monona Township in 1841. The 1850 census which I found on the internet lists them in Monona township together with a daughter (Alma) age 8 and a son (undicipherable) age 6. The 1882 history indicates that she and some others engaged a surveyer in 1856, in connection with the laying out of the town of Monona. I would be interested in finding out date of death, place of burial, maiden name and any information on her birthplace. The 1850 census shows her and Austin as coming from New York. According to family lore, Austin left for California at the time of the gold rush and left the family in the care of a black farmhand. He returned many years later, but then left for the Indian wars, where he died. My great grandparents Austin V. DePue (aka Alfred or Albert Van DePue) and Susan Ann (James) DePue were married in Volney in 1870. They moved with their family to Plankinton, South Dakota in 1883 and to Harrington, Washington in 1903. Their daughter Maude is my grandmother.
