Hi, Tim
Thanks for your quick response! Yes, the 1852 Iowa Census does list William by name. Also indicated are a total of 3 people in the family, all aliens (two males, one female). So, I'm guessing it would be William, Eleanor, and either a foreigh-born child or sibling.
Getting George's baptismal record would be a great idea! I wonder if the Clayton County Genealogical site might list Catholic churches located in Jefferson Twp., Clayton County.
Interesting about the Civil War information. Wonder why William would be in an Ohio regiment? I don't know anything about the WSS of Cincinnati...
By the way, have you found the 1886 plat of Washington Twp., Winneshiek County, which shows the land owned by George?
Yes, direct email would be great:
Are you interested in contact or meeting your cousin Carolyn? She, her husband, Richard, and I are all in our late 60s, recently retired from Oklahoma City Community College. William is her GG Grandfather: William, his son, George, his son Henry, his daughter, Beatrice (by Henry's first marriage), then Carolyn. She has lots of family information to share, and was really excited when I gave her the results of my research. However, I didn't want to pass along your contact information without your approval.
Write when you can...
Steve
