Any info. about these families is appreciated.
My Great Grandfather Lensford Adams was the child of a Mr. Ellis. His mother died just a few weeks after his birth and Mr. Ellis took him to his friend John Quincy Adams to take care of until he returned to claim him. Mr. Ellis never returned and Mr. John Quincy and Rosa Adams claimed them as their own and gave him the surname of Adams. Lensford married a Lillie Church and they had one child names LILLIE. I never found anymore info on her. Lillie Church Adams got a divorce from Lensford on Nov. 3, 1892 in Iowa. She was the daughter or Orange and Julia Church. Second marriage for Lensford was to Sarah Bonner of McGregor, daughter of William and Sarah Bonner.
He was called Capt. Lenn as at one time he operated his own ferryboat on the Mississippi River between McGregor, Iowa and Prairie Du Chien. Sarah and he took the children to Ottumwa where they were put in the Homefinders Home; (Orphanage) Only Malen was adopted by Herman and Ellen Sellwood of Van Buren County. He had three children by Sarah Bonner as follows: Malen, my grandfather, Mabel Elsie Adams and Charles Adams. Mabel nor her brother Charles were ever adopted. Mabel was a housekeeper in at least 8 homes. She was married twice and died at Glenwood Iowa. She was buried next to her husband William Munyon. They didn't have any children.I was told that my ggrandfather Lensford Adams died at Prairie Du Chein but have found no proof of it. My grandpa Malen was born in Keosaqua, Iowa and married Helen McCarty Myers; daughter of James P. Myers and Ollie McCarty. My mother Ollie Sellwood Lanigan was named after her grandmother in Keosaqua, Iowa. She died in Davenport, Iowa in 1986. Ollie McCarty and James P. Myers of Keosaqua had a total of 12 children. My grandpa Malen Adams Sellwood died at Ottumwa, Iowa and is buried at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. There is no marker.
