Nancy,
Are you sure the Opera House/Restaurant was located in Clayton co.?There was a Bijou Opera House in Dubuque. It burned in the early 1900's. I found this notice in the Dubuque Daily Herald, May 16, 1896, about a new restaurant opening in Dubuque:
Grand Opening.
The Bijou restaurant and saloon, 281 Sixth street, between Main and Iowa, Saturday- May 16, 1896. Fine free lunch and first class music. Yorself and friends are cordially invited.
J. P. DAVISI haven't been able to confirm that there was an Oakland Hotel or Hotel Oakland in Dubuque during this same time-period, but unless you are certain that the place was in Clayton co. you might want to take a look in Dubuque.
You mention a photo .... if you'd like to send me a copy I could post it on this Query board along with your original query. Perhaps someone will recognize the scene.
