childrens' deaths

My great grandfather Henry James Putnam and his wife Rose lost 4 children to death in the space of 4 weeks circa 1862-1864 in Clayton County Iowa. I recently learned this from his Sioux County obituary. Does anyone have knowledge of an epidemic or other event that would cause such a tragedy at that time in Iowa history? Can anyone suggest where I might look for cause of death of these children?
