Monona: Dr. C. E. Nichols died February 13th in the home of his youngest son, Algil Nichols, at Giard. Rev. Warren E. Feller, pastor of the Giard Methodist church conducted services in the Carl G. Schultz funeral home Saturday afternoon at one-thirty and burial was made in the Giard cemetery beside his first wife.

Dr. Nichols practiced medicine at Giard for many years, retiring in 1912. Being of a jovial disposition he had many friends. He was a kind father and a loving husband. His first wife was the former Martha Jane Snyder of Prairie du Chien, and there were seven children born to them, four daughters and three sons, namely: Mrs. Zella Klotzbach of Mason City, Charles J. Nichols of Luana, Clarence F. Nichols of Milltown, Wis., Mrs. Orlin Shinofield of Moline, Ill., Mrs. Arthur M. Benzing of McGregor, Mrs. Foyd Dolan of Alexandria, S.Dak., and Algil L. Nichols on the old homestead.

In 1927 he was married to Mrs. Jennie Hash Harrington at Hot Springs, Ark., where they have resided the past eight years.

Besides the seven children and the widow, he leaves seventeen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Josephine Strong of Britt, Iowa, and one brother, Arthur, of Marshal, Minn., and numerous other relatives and friends.

The Register sympathizes with the family in their loss.

Charles Edward Nichols, son of Merritt and Miranda Nichols was born Dec. 10, 1846 at Sycamore, Ill. The family resided at this place until the deceased was nine years of age. Then they moved to Giard township and resided there until 1860, when the family moved to Oronoco, Minn.

On Feb. 28, 1864, the deceased enlisted in the 23rd* Minnesota Infantry Volunteers at Rochester, Minn. Poor health necessitated his retirement from service and the following year he received an honorable discharge.

He began the study of medicine at an early age and in 1880 he finished his course in medicine, having graduated from the Medical Department at Iowa State University. After his graduation he returned to Giard township where he practiced until his retirement in 1912. During this time he served as postmaster at Giard for several years.

On July 5, 1869 he was united in marriage to Martha Jane Snyder at Prairie du Chien, Wis., and to this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters, namely, Mrs. Zella Klotzbach, of Mason City, Iowa; Charles J. of Luana, Iowa; Clarence F. of Milltown, Wisconsin; Mrs. Orlin Shinofield, Moline, Ill.; Mrs. Arthur Benzing, McGregor, Iowa; Mrs. Floyd Dolan, Alexandria, S. Dak.; Algie L. residing on the old homestead.

On Aug. 1st, 1927, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Jennie Hash Harrington at Hot Springs, Ark, where they have resided for the last eight years.

On Feb. 5, 1935 being in a position to know his physical condition, it was his wish to make one more visit to the old home. The change of climate being too great for him, he contracted a severe cold and passed away at the home of his son Algie, Feb. 13, 1935 at the age of 88 years, two months and three days. His seven children were all at his bedside to administer his last wishes and comfort, his sorrowing wife being unable to be with him on account of illness.

In the early part of his life he united with the United Brethern Church at Giard and later he transferred his membership to the Cong. Church at Monona, Iowa. He was a kind and affectionate father, a good neighbor and friend. Being of a jovial disposition, he will be missed by all who knew him and we will say of him (his favorite Scripture passage) "Well done, thy good and faithful servant - enter thou into the joy of the Lord". He was ready to answer his Master's summons and about his last words he uttered were "Let us Pray."

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, the seven children, 17 grand children, 13 great grand-children, one sister, Mrs. Josephine Stong, Britt, Iowa, one brother Arthur of Marshal, Minn., numerous other relatives and friends.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Warren L. Feller at the Schultz Funeral Home at Monona, Iowa. Burial was made beside his first wife at the Giard cemetery on Saturday, Feb. 16, 1935.
