Elkader Register, Thur., 1 Nov. 1906. Garnavillo column.

Frank Brownson was born on the old homestead near National, Iowa, April 20, 1875, and died Oct. 25th, 1906, at Excelsior Springs, Mo., after a sudden illness of about two days. He grew to manhood on the farm and at the age of twenty-three years spent some time at Dubuque, and later in the state of Texas. While on his way home he stopped off at F. Leavenworth, Kansas, where the boys were enlisting for service in the Philippines. He decided to join them and enlisted on August 8, 1899, in Company M., 32nd U.S.V. Twenty-two months were spent in foreign service, during which time he was engaged in a number of skirmishes. He received the rank of Corporal before returning to San Francisco, Cal., April 19th, where he was formally mustered out of the service at the Presido, on May 8th, 1901. He reached home on the 15th day of the same month. The summer was spent under the parental roof and later he took a course in telegraphy at Highland Park College, Des Moines. Feb. 19, 1903, he was united in marriage with Hallie Dettman, of Garnavillo, Ia. They lived on their farm in Linton, Kans., until Jan. 11, 1906, when they moved to Holt, Mo., where Mr. Brownson engaged in the drug business. On Oct. 22nd, not feeling well, he decided to go to Excelsior Springs, thinking the treatment there would benefit him. It did not, however, and with the best of medical care and nursing his life could not be saved. He was of a quiet, retiring disposition, possessed a sunny, pleasant temperament, yet was of a strong, forceful character. Upright and industrious, he held the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. fraternity, the members of which rendered every assistance possible during his illness. Funeral services were held at National Sunday, Oct. 28th, Rev. Cheney, of Monona, officiating. Besides the grief stricken wife he leaves his parents, three brothers, Dr. J. D. Brownson, of Monona, Ia., Herbert C. and Lloyd, also two sisters, Lois and Una, who are all at home. Sincere sympathy is tendered the sorrowing ones in this sad bereavement.
