Elkader Register, Thur., 1 Nov. 1906. Garnavillo column.

It has pleased Providence to take from our midst Mrs. D. B. Clair, after an earthly pilgrimage of 65 years, 10 months and 20 days. Phoebe Ellen Crosby was born Nov. 25th, 1840, in Perry County, Ohio. At the age of sixteen she was united in marriage to Davis B. Clair near Elkport, this county. She was the mother of six children, two of whom preceded her to the Great Beyond, the one, Emma Elvira, died in infancy and is buried in the cemetery at Lena, Ill., here Mr. and Mrs. Clair resided for about four or five years after their marriage, before coming to Garnavillo, and the other, Sheldon Elmer, died at the age of twelve and is buried in the new Garnavillo cemetery. The surviving children are: Mary Elizabeth, married to Edward Schroeder, of Postville; Cora Caroline, to Jacob Kramer, Jr., of McGregor; Charles Homer, to Rose Hartwig, of Garnavillo; and Mabel Abi to Lee Kleckner, of Anamosa, Ia. The husband, twelve grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. H. M. Bunker, of Bristow, Iowa, and a brother, John Crosby, of Eugene, Ore., also survive. Some years ago Mrs. Clair had several attacks of apoplexy, but recovered from them sufficiently to again enjoy her domestic comforts. She thought not of self, however, but with a true mother's heart, she continued to toil incessantly with a love and devotion for the dear ones God had entrusted to her care. On the 4th of October she was again seized with a stroke, which was followed by another Sunday, rendering her unconscious. The medical aid and the careful nursing she received at the hands of her husband and children and sister seemed of no avail, and she grew slowly weaker day by day until finally at five o'clock on Tuesday evening, the 1_th (Looks like 16th.) inst., her spirit bark drifted out on the boundless sea of eternity. Her death caused a general heartfelt regret and her memory will remain dear to many as one who in her heart were found the precious gems of love, truth and friendship, which could not help being felt and appreciated. Funeral services were conducted at the brick church Thursday afternoon by Rev. Francis, of McGregor, after which the weary pilgrim was taken to the city cemetery to rest in peaceful slumber until the sweet summons shall come, calling her hence to that brighter, happier home in heaven.
