Elkader Register, Thur., 9 July 1903.
On Sunday when Jas. Russell and his son Joseph were gathering Goose-berries on Big Island, below town, the latter was considerably startled by the discovery of the body of a man. The remains were in a ghastly condition. He immediately came to town and informed the officers.
Supt. L. L. Hulverson being informed proceeded to the place and at once identified the body as that of Peter Velerswen, who had disappeared from the county asylum on Feb. 13th.
It is supposed that he accidently fell in the river through the ice and his body carried out by the spring flood on to this island.
Coroner Griffin came over from McGregor Monday and held an inquest, the verdict of the jury being in accordance with the above.
Velerswen had been an inmate of the county asylum since June 13, 1886, and was a harmless, hard working man. His remains were interred at the county home.
We learn he has a sister living near Gunder.
