Eldon Kregel

Eldon Gustav Fred Kregel, 82, Monona, Iowa, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center, West Union, Iowa. Eldon was born on October 9, 1928, rural Luana, Iowa, to Gustav and Martha (Voelz) Kregel. Eldon was baptized on Nov. 4, 1928 and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa, on June 10, 1945. He attended Eno Country School through the eighth grade.

Eldon was drafted into the United States Army on July 10, 1951. He received his training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Following his basic training, Eldon was sent to leadership school and was then shipped overseas to Korea. Eldon made the rank of C.P.L. and Section Leader for the 19th Engr. Combat Group, 92nd Searchlight Company. He was honorably discharged 1953.

Eldon was united in marriage to Marita Jaeger in Elkader, Iowa, on June 29, 1954. Seven children were born to this union. Eldon farmed for many years and also worked for Double L, Britz-Hedbrink and Tech Space. Eldon was baptized and confirmed into the Roman Catholic faith in 1975. He was a member of the American Legion, St. Patrick Service Society and St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marita Kregel, Monona; seven children, Sharon Kregel, Ladson, SC, Sandy (Alan) Coleman, Monona, Julie Kregel, Bluffton, Scott (Denise) Kregel, Monona, Neil (Kim) Kregel, Waukon, Rhonda (Loren) Ihde, Fayette, L'Dean (AnnMarie) Kregel, Champaign, IL; twenty grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren (and two more on the way); one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Donald (Jane) Kregel, Luana; his in-laws, Norma Engelken, Dyersville, Bob (Betty) Jaeger, Dubuque, Raymond Jaeger, Dumous, TX, Roland Jaeger, Ladson, SC, Frances Jaeger, Dubuque, Eileen Jaeger, Guttenberg; many nieces and nephews; his best friends, James Farmer, Gunder, Bonnie Meek, Odon, IN and his extended family and friends at the West Union Good Samaritan Society.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Martha Kregel; two brothers, Gordon and Gerald Kregel in infancy; his in-laws, Lavon Kregel, Albert and Lucille Jaeger, Lorraine and Adolph Wolter, Dorothy and Russell Cole, George Jaeger, Don and Wilma Jaeger, Joseph Jaeger, Evelyn and Elmer Scherbring, Walter Engelken, Susie Jaeger, Shirley Jaeger, Vicki Jaeger, Reva Mae Jaeger and his special friend from the army, Karl Meek.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, from 2-8 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona, Iowa, and one hour before mass time at the church on Friday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona, Iowa. The Rev. Greg Bahl will be the celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Monona, Iowa, with military honors.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Monona, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
