Nellie M. Brainard, 80, of Luana died Monday, August 1, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
Nellie May Brainard was born January 24, 1931 in rural Marquette, the daughter of Kenneth and Claudie (Rose) Gordon. She attended school in Marquette. Following school she worked at the button factory. February 9, 1948 she married Adelbert Brainard in Elkader. They farmed together for many years, operating a dairy for a time and raising hogs and crops. Nellie enjoyed being outside working in her vegetable and flower gardens, feeding the birds and reading. Most of all, she enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra (Vernon) Gavle of Decorah; three sons, Gilbert (Barbara) and Tony (Nikki), both of Monona, and Richard (Gwen) of Luana; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack Gordon of Marion; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Brainard of Decorah, and Alice and Norma Jean Brainard, both of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adelbert, who died in 2003; a brother, Kimball; and three sisters, Florence Phiefield, Etta Withers and Kathryn Roffman.The Waukon Standard, August 10, 2011
