Oakley F. Davis, who died at Elkader Nov. 22, was a brother of James Davis of this place. He was born in Carmarthanshire, S. Wales, Nov. 1, 1827. Besides his brother, James, he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Greathead of Fayette county, and Mrs. Evans of McGregor.
Mr. Davis was a soldier of the civil war, a member of Co. F, 4th Iowa Infantry. He had been a resident of Elkader for over 50 years. At an early day he was landlord of the Turkey River House. For years he worked at his trade as carpenter and many of Elkader's buildings were erected under his direction.

Sunday evening, November 22nd, Oakley F. Davis, one of our oldest residents and a veteran of the Civil War, passed away, after an illness of several months.
Mr. Davis was born in Carmarthanshire, S. Wales, November 1st, 1827, and died November 22nd, 1908, at the age of 81 years and 21 days. He came to America in October, 1851, remaining in New York one year when he came to Fayette county, Iowa, where on Feb. 15, 1855, he was united in marriage with Jane Roberts.
He came to Elkader about 1852. To the above union were born three daughters and one son, the son dying in infancy. The oldest daughter, who was married to R. T. Fobes, of Hull, Iowa, died August 9th, 1887. The two daughters surviving are Mrs. S. Shutter, of Randall, Minn., and Mrs. E. C. Stearns, of Warner, S.D. His wife died in Elkader April 25th, 1865.
On February 22nd, 1873, he was married to Mrs. Eliza A. Hale, who, with her son, D. C. Hale, still survive. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild, one brother, James, of Fayette, Iowa, and three sisters, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Greathead, of Fayette county, and Mrs. Evans, of McGregor.
Mr. Davis was a soldier of the Civil War, a member of Co. F. 4th Iowa Infantry, and an honored member of Boardman Post 184, of Elkader. He was a charter member of Elkader lodge No. 72 A.F. & A.M.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, under the auspices of Elkader lodge No. 72 A.F. & A.M., Rev. Dickey conducting the services at the Congregational church. The interment was by the solemn Masonic service in the East Side cemetery.
Oakley Davis had been a resident of Elkader for over fifty years. At an early day he was the landlord of the Turkey River House, then located between this office and Glesne Bros. store. For years he worked at his trade as a carpenter. Many of our buildings were erected under his direction. He was a quiet man, steadfast in his friendship, a good neighbor and citizen. Our brother and comrade has gone beyond, may he rest in Peace.
The following served as pall bearers: Active - W. W. Davidson, J. F. Becker, Ross Richardson, Will Becker, S. V. Jack and John Bahr. Honorary - J. H. Hill, R. E. Price, D. G. Griffith, A. Kramer, H. W. Wilke and J. C. Stemmer.
