Private graveside services are to be held at a later date, at Monona City Cemetery, for
Lowell L. Gehring, 90, Monona, Iowa, who died Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Northgate Care Center, Waukon, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.Lowell was born on August 31, 1919, in Elgin, Iowa, to William and Nettie (Johnson) Gehring. He was baptized at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, Iowa, and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, Iowa. He graduated from Elkader High School. In September of 1940, Lowell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During World War II, he served in the South West Pacific Theater, making the landings at Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Iwo Jima. Lowell also served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. During the Vietnam War, he served as a Military Advisor to the Royal Thai Marine Corps, Thailand. He also served at many other Marine and Naval Bases in the United States until his retirement in 1966. He then accepted employment at the Amelco Corporation, Mountain View, California, which subsequently became the Teledyne Corporation. Lowell was a member of the American Legion
Lowell was united in marriage to Betty Marie Wirkler on December 29, 1945, at Yuma, AZ. To this union one daughter, Jeneen, was born. In 1977. Lowell and Betty returned to Iowa, residing in Monona where he was self-employed in the TV, Radio Repair & Sales business until complete retirement. He enjoyed remodeling their home and spending time in his computer room. .
Survivors include his daughter, Jeneen Anne Gehring, Monona; granddaughters, Jina (Tom) Dziekan, Joliet, IL, Joleigh (Steve) DeGraw, San Jose, CA, and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Emma Dziekan. Lowell was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Gehring, in 2006; his mother, Nettie Gehring, in 1957, and his dad, William Gehring, in 1992.
