Elkader Register, 03 Sept. 1884.

Peter Markerd, who has been in the poor house for the past eleven years, died at that institution on the 26th ult., of consumption, at the age of 65 years. He was born in Prussia and when he came to this country was possessed of $11,000, yet he dies in the county house. He formerly lived in Jefferson township.
