On Sunday afternoon the people of Elkader learned with sorrow that another veteran of the Civil War had passed away. It was Dar Hill, who had been quite sick for some time.
Darwin Hill was born in Orleans county, New York, in the year 1842, and died at his home in Read township Sunday, May 19, 1918.
He came to Iowa at an early age and has made his home here ever since. He was married to Katherine Markle in the year 1873 at Elkport, Iowa, since which time he has lived continuously in Elkader and Read township.
His wife and ten children survive him, besides a sister, a brother, two half-brothers and a half-sister. The names of the children are Mrs. Hattie Marlett, of McGregor; Clara, dying in infancy; Mrs. Alma Bartelson, of Rockford, Ill.; Warren, of Elkader; John, of McGregor; Mrs. Mary Phelps, Rockford, Ill.; Eli, of Wyalusing, Wis.; George, in the army; Roy, of Elkader; Delbert, in the army; Mrs. Loma Stendel, of Elkader; The sister is Mrs. Mary Vansickle, of Preston, Minn.; brother James, of Idaho; the half-brothers, Clarence, of Doris, Iowa; and Samuel, of Armstrong, Iowa; the half-sister, Mrs. Clara Baker, of Minneapolis, Minn.; twenty-one grandchildren are also survivors.
Mr. Hill, enlisted twice in the Union Army during the Civil War, the first time with an Illinois regiment, the 18th infantry, the date of his enlistment being Feb. 1, 1863. His second enlistment was with company E, 9th Iowa infantry on Feb. 1, 1865. His last discharge was dated July 18, 1865, at Louisville, Ky. He was the last man to be enrolled in the local G.A.R. Post.
The funeral services were held at the Elkader Congregational church Tuesday at 2 p.m., Rev. C. H. Franke, of the Evangelical church, officiating. Interment was in the East Side cemetery.
