Bernard Hanson, son of Bernard and Susan Hanson, was born in Germany, Feb. 8, 1840. In 1848 he came with his parents to America and for a few years lived in Pennsylvania and in the early fifties the family came to Iowa and settled on Cox Creek. In 1862 Mr. Hanson enlisted in the 72nd Illinois Infantry, serving three years, during which period he participated in many of the greatest battles of the Civil War, including Vicksburg and Bull Run. He received an honorable discharge in 1865 and returned to Iowa and since then has been a resident of Strawberry Point and vicinity.
Feb. 14, 1867, he was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss Julia Scully, of Cox Creek. Of this union seven children were born, three of whom, James, Frederick and Agnes, together with his beloved companion, preceded him to the grave. Those remaining to mourn his loss are Thomas W., of Dubuque, Dr. Edward B., of Edgewood, Margaret J. and May K., of this city. He passed peacefully to the Great Beyond, Sunday, April 2, 1911, at 2 p.m. and the funeral obsequies were held at St. Mary's church, April 4, the Rev. Father Hartigan officiating.
