John Lester Sass

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 21, 1972, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa, for John Lester Sass.

John Sass, the son of William Sass and Sophia nee Rehburg, was born on November 26, 1898, in Giard Township, Clayton Co., Iowa. He was baptized on April 9, 1899, at St. Paul Lutheran, Garnavillo, and was confirmed at the same church on April 5, 1914. He attended a rural school near McGregor.

On November 28, 1922, he was united in marriage with Lucy Sass at Monona. They farmed near McGregor for about 10 years and then moved to a farm south of Luana where they continued to live until they moved into Monona in 1968. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona.

He became ill at his home on Monday evening, Sept. 18, and passed away shortly after at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 22 days.

Surviving, besides his wife, Lucy, are his daughter, Isabel, who is Mrs. Dale Kurth of Farmersburg; two grandchildren, Larry Kurth and Gloria Keehner and two great grandchildren, Darel Ann and Rodney Kurth; also two brothers, Henry Sass of Dubuque and Louis Sass of Marquette and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Kruse of Dubuque. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, William and Fred, and one sister, Mrs. Ray Corlett.

Rev. R. E. Langholz officiated at the funeral services. Mrs. George Heins was the organist.

Pallbearers were Donald Sass, Ramon Sass, Karl Wilker, Norbert Lembke, Edward Sass and Harland Kottman.

Honorary Pallbearers were Glen Corlett, Virgil Kurth, Calvin Henkes and Lorraine Lenth.

Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran, Monona.
