Mrs. Josephine Connell

Alice Josephine Connall was born February 16, 1857, on a Clayton county farm, and died February 6, 1926 at Bellevue, Iowa, Moulton Hospital, where she had gone for medical treatment. The remains were brought to the home of her sister, Mrs. Harriet Luce, of McGregor. Interment was in Pleasent Grove Cemetery.

Josephine Dickens was the eighth child of Edward G. and Ann Druzilla Dickens, first pioneers of Clayton county. She spent her early life on Pleasant Ridge, attending the district school and taking part in all social activities of the community.

Much of her later life was spent in California and Nebraska. About the year 1904 she was united in marriage to Herbert Connall and lived at Marshaltown, Iowa. After his death in 1916 she came to McGregor where she has since resided. Her many talents and scintilating wit, made her a charming companion, and a great help in all social affairs.

Mrs. Connall was always ready and willing to assist in any project for the betterment of the community, and was vitally interested in all questions of civic improvement. She was an ardent temperance advocate, and a member of the McGregor Congregational Church.

Beside her musical and histrionic ability, she composed many poems and gingles, a booklet of which will be published by the family.

Mrs. Connall leaves to mourn her loss three sisters, Mrs. Larry Jennings and Mrs. Harriet Luce, McGregor, Mrs. Mary Brown, of Yankton, South Dakota, Two brothers, C. C. Dickens of Brunean, Idaho, and R. R. Dickens of Tulalip, Washington.

Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs. W. S. Hector and Earl Scrogum of Chicago, and Mrs. R. B. Lee of Belle Plaine, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs L. A. Flagg, of Dubuque, and Mrs R. R. Dickens, of Tulalip, Washington.
