Fredrick Huff

The march and the batttles of another of the Grand Army of the Republic are all over through the passing from this life into the great beyond of the soul of Mr. Huff. His body was laid to rest in the city cemetery under the arching sky awaiting the resurrection bugle call. He was a man of integrity and honor and loved and esteemed by his neighbors and friends.

Comrade Fredrick Huff was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on March the 17th, 1842; and died at his home at Monona, Iowa , March the first, 1923, lacking only 16 days of being 81 years of age. He grew to manhood and received his early education in his native state, Pennsylvania. During the time of the Civil War, when the spirit of secession and rebellion had captured the public sentiment of the southern states of our country Comrade Huff enlisted as a volunteer in answer to the call of President Lincoln. He served in the 3d regiment of Co. H. of Pennsylvania reserve Infantry. After his period of three years of enlistment had expired he again enlisted and served in various capacities until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged on the 4th day of April 1866. After his discharge from the United States army he came to Iowa and for a time worked in and around Burlington, Iowa. Here he met his life's companion, Miss Mary Flair. They were married on September 18 1869. Unto them were born five children, two sons and three daughters, of whom one daughter, Alberta F. Hoffman preceded the father in death 24 years. Fifteehn years ago last January they came to Monona to spend the remaining days of their life in retirement.

A youth in the United States Army once wrote:
"Going West" isn't dying;
It's just going west, to a glorified rest,
As the setting sun, when the day is done,
In a glory of red sinks low in the west.
Never suggesting a thought of the dead-
But rather, of rising again in the morn-
A sun reborn!
"Going West" isn't dying-
It is just going west to a glorified rest.

Funderal services were held at the Methodist Church, the minister of the church officiatint last Saturday afternoon.

Date of death 1 Mar 1923. Taken from family obit collection, with no mention of the newspaper.
