Henry Frederick Gruel, son of William and Christine (Mueller) Gruel, was born in Garnavillo, April 01, 1880. He was baptized by the Rev. F. Fruechtennicht in the Lutheran church of Garnavillo on May 16, 1880. He attended public and religious school and was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Garnavillo by the Rev. F. Sommerlad.

As a young man he helped his parents at home. After his father died he worked as a hired man on various farms.

He was married to Miss Lena Drews on Feb. 29, 1908. To this union three children were born. Two daughters died in infancy.

For the first 12 years of their married life Mr. and Mrs. Gruel lived on a farm near Monona. In 1920 they moved to Farmersburg, and in 1933 they moved to the farm which was his home at the time of his death. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church here in Farmersburg.

For the past several years Mr. Gruel's health had not been good, but never was his condition serious. Last Saturday afternoon Mr. Gruel took sick and from that time his condition rapidly became worse. Monday he was taken to the hospital at McGregor, where he died Tuesday morning at about 4:45 o'clock.

He is survived by his wife, one son Floyd, his daughter-in-law Iva Mae, three grandchildren, Janet, Carol, and Nancy; three brothers, Will of Monona, Herman of Luana, and John of Harvard, Ill., and one sister, (Amelia) Mrs. John Koss of Garnavillo.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 06, at 1:15 at the home and at 1:30 at St. John's Lutheran church. Burial was in Farmersburg and Wagner cemetery.

Pallbearers were Elmer Lenth, Herb Lenth, Harry Debes, Fred Schultz, Marvin Klinkenberg, Louie Breitsprecher, Harry Schievelbein, Harvey Sass.
