Tewes, Henry W. 1870 - 1952

Henry W. Tewes, son of William and Marie Tewes was born December 25, 1870, in Read township, Clayton county, Iowa, and died at his home in Elkader, January 18, 1952. He had reached the age of eighty-one years and twenty-four days.

He was baptized and confirmed in Zion church at Clayton Center by the late Rev. F. W. Seifert. He received his education in the rural school near his home.

On December 13, 1892 he was united in marriage to Anna Pauline Hagensick. After their marriage they resided on the home farm of his parents until the year 1902 when Mr. Tewes health began to fail and they decided to move to Elkader in the hope that the rest would improve his health. He regained his health for a good many years, but during the last few years became ill again. During the past year his condition became noticeably worse and although being able to be up and about his home until a few days before his death he suffered greatly during the past six months.

Mr. and Mrs. Tewes were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary in the year 1942 and in all to spend fifty-nine years together as man and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Tewes were unseperable during all those long years, sharing joys and sorrows with each other. Both of them got their main enjoyment in their home, garden and flowers.

One child was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tewes, but died in infancy.

Mr. Tewes was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church of Elkader.

He is survived by his wife, one sister, Mrs. Anna Witte, also a number of nieces and nephews.

One brother and three sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held from the residence at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, Jan. 21. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Herman Lenth, Albert Breitsprecher, Arthur Hochhaus, Arthur Buckman, George Heins Jr. and George Kelpien.

People from a distance who attended the services: Mrs. Emilie Lenth, Mrs. Lenora Kurdelmeyer, Miss Elsie Possehl, Mrs. Helen Dickman, Mr. and Mrs. George Heins and Mrs. Bertha Gray, all of Monona; Fred Becker, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Becker, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Becker, Mrs. Atherton Wickersheim, all of Giard; Mrs. Will Kaiser, Mr. and Mrs. Eldo Kaiser, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Milewskey, all of Garnavillo; Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Matt, National; Mr. and Mrs. Lawerence Schulte, Guttenberg; Mrs. Minnie Greve, Mrs. Earl Pust, Littleport.
