Clayton County Register, 17 Feb. 1955.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 10, in Waterloo and Elkader for Walter R. Marshall, 62, former Elkaderite, who died suddenly from a heart attack on Feb. 08 at his home in Waterloo.

Services were conducted from the Sacred Heart church in Waterloo at 9 o'clock with Msgr. E. . O'Hagan officiating. The body was then brought to the McTaggart funeral home in Elkader from where burial was made in St. Joseph's cemetery. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. A. Gorman, of St. Joseph's Catholic church in Elkader, officiated at the burial services.

Elkader Pallbearers were: Ed. Finley, J. P. Zapf, John Roach, F. E. Dittmer, J. P. McTaggart, Otto Behrens and Milton Kramer.

Marshall was born June 04, 1892, at Mederville. He was a son of Miles and Rose Marie Marshall. He moved with his parents to Elkader at an early age and attended the public schools here.

After graduating from high school in 1911, he entered the jewelry business. Later he was associated with E. A. Burlingame in the grocery business. He sold his interests in 1918 when he was called into the armed forces. While stationed at Montgomery, Ala., he was married to Miss Bid Roach. She preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 1951.

Following the war he returned to Elkader in 1919 and entered the grocery business with Ray Lembke. He sold this interest to Charles Koehn in 1921 and then served as clerk of the district court of Clayton county for two terms.

He then moved to St. Paul, Minn., where he entered the oil burner business. Later his company transferred him to Waterloo, where he served as sales representative for many years.

After breakfast, on Feb. 08, Marshall had gone to his car prepartory to driving to work. Some time later his daughter, who lived with him, noticed him still at the car. Thinking that he was having trouble with the car, she went out to help and found him slumped over the wheel.

He is survived by his daughter, Maryan Rose, and his mother, Mrs. M. G. Dodge, of Strawberry Point. He was a member of the Holy Name society, Sacred Heart church of Waterloo and Becker-Chapman Post No. 138 of the American Legion.
