Funeral services for William Gottschalk, 80, were held at the Witt Funeral chapel Wednesday afternoon, April 07, at one o'clock to the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at Clayton Center at 1:30 o'clock. The Rev. A. Meyer of St. Paul's Lutheran church, Garnavillo, officiated. Burial was in Zion's new cemetery at Clayton Center.
Mr. Gottschalk was taken ill last July and was taken to Finley hospital, Dubuque, where he underwent a kidney operation in August. He later returned here and was able to be about until five weeks ago when he was confined to his bed. He died at his home in Elkader Sunday, April 04th.
William John Gottschalk was born in Germany on August 19, 1867, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Gottschalk. He came with his parents to America when six months old. They settled on a small acreage near Clayton Center. He attended the rural schools in the community. He was married on April 05, 1891 at the Zion Lutheran church in Clayton Center to Emma L. Kahlbaum. They lived on two different farms near Clayton Center. In December, 1946, they retired and moved to Elkader, which has since been their home. He was confirmed by the late Rev. F. W. Seifert and a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church in Clayton Center. Mr. and Mrs. Gottschalk were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary April 05, 1942.
He is survived by his wife and three sons and two daughters: namely, Mrs. Albert (Lucinda) Glawe, Harvey and John, all of St. Olaf; Vallie of Elkader and Mrs. Kenneth (Effie) Thompson, Monona and two brothers and three sisters, Charles of Elkader and John of Elkport, Mrs. Louisa Lenth, Farmersburg; Mrs. Herman Lenth, Elkader; Mrs. William Seeland, St. Olaf. Also fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Pallbearers were: Frank Bente, Louis Stahlbaum, Ed Leonard, Emil Schuety, John Maehl and Charles Glawe.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schaefer, Fayette; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schaefer, Mrs. Emma Schaefer, all of Oelwein, and Mr. and Mrs. Will Mantle, Minnesota.
