Samuel Ross Nichols, 78, son of Freman and Francis Nichols, was born Oct. 13, 1866, at Colesburg where he spent his childhood. At the age of 23 he was married to Loretta Jones of Garber. They spent a number of years on a farm near Updegraff, later moving to a farm near Garber where they lived until her death May 22, 1937. Upon leaving the farm he spent the summers with his son at Waterville and the last three winters at the Lutheran Old Folk's home at Manchester where he was taken ill and was moved to Dr. Willard's hospital where he died Monday morning, Jan. 08.
His father, mother and two sisters preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn, three sons, Leslie of Waterville, Earl of Strawberry Point and Norman of Greeley; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Brown of Colesburg; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and other relatives.
Services were held at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church, Garber, Iowa, Jan. 11, 1945 at 1:30 p.m., the Rev. S. E. Birkner, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in the Brown cemetery near Colesburg.
