GARBER: A heart attack suffered Thursday morning at 3:30 o'clock was fatal to Ernest Wesley Smock, 54. Mr. Smock was in good health until Dec. 07, 1944 when word was received from the War Department of the death of his son Staff Sgt. Burdet Wesley Smock who was killed in action on Nov. 10, 1944 in France.
Mr. Smock was born on a farm Feb. 14, 1890, the son of George W. and Minnie B. Hall Smock.
On Feb. 12, 1913, he was married to Emma Jaster and to this union eight children were born: Staff Sergeant Burdet W.; Bernard of Mason City; Burnell and Bentley at home: Mrs. Beulah Voss, Cedar Rapids; Blanche, Bernadine and Betty at home; also surviving are one grandson Eldon John Smock; one granddaughter Eldene Kay Smock of Mason City; three brothers, Cecil and Claude, Greeley, and Earl, Walker; four sisters, Mrs. Gertie Ingles, Greeley; Mrs. Hazel Morley and Mrs. Bernice Jones, Edgewood and Mrs. Floy Hahn, Dubuque.
His parents and three brothers Bert, Ray and Lawrence, preceded him in death.
He spent his entire life in this vicinity. After his marriage he farmed for about 11 years and for the past 16 years has been in the produce business.
He was a member of St. John's churchman's brotherhood.
Funeral services were held at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church, Sunday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. S. E. Birkner, pastor, officiating.
Pallbearers were John Costigan, Leo Kirshbaum, Ralph Meyer, Guy Coonfare, James McLane and George Chettinger.
Burial was in Mt. Harmony cemetery.
