MCGREGOR: Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church here Thursday morning for Max Heck, 81, of Dubuque, former McGregorite who was struck and instantly killed by a car as he was crossing the street Tuesday morning in front of his home in Dubuque. The driver of the car, Bernard Brown, 26, was held by police following the autopsy on charge of failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian on a crosswalk.
Mr. Heck was born here August 11, 1863, and had lived here all his life with the exception of the past eight years spent in Dubuque. He is survived by his sister, Pauline Heck of Dubuque, and one brother, Rudolph Heck Minneapolis, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Emmett, Adolph, and Charles, and four sisters, Katherine, Jean, Barbara and Laura.
Services were conducted here by Father Vernon Peters assisted by Mr. Heck's grand-nephew, Father Robert Saunders, an instructor at Loras college, Dubuque.
Burial was postponed until Sunday morning awaiting the arrival of Joe Elsworth, a nephew recently employed in Spokane, Wash.
