Joseph Zapf, one of the pioneer farmers of Clayton county, died at his farm home east of here, Saturday morning, Dec. 09, at 8 o'clock after an illness of several years. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Joseph's church at Garnavillo with the Rev. L. C. Iekel officiating at the requiem high mass. The Rev. H. Ginter of Garber was in the sanctuary. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery at Garnavillo.
Mr. Zapf was born March 10, 1861, in Volga township. He was married Feb. 19, 1895, to Ida Matt, who survives him with the following children: Mrs. Ben (Gertrude) Meyer of Garber; Clarence Zapf, Volga; Mrs. Evelyn Hildebrand, Garnavillo; and Raymond Zapf at home, also 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons who died in infancy, and by four brothers and one sister.

Zapf, Elkader; Mrs. Louis Howe, Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Matt, Edgewood; Mrs. Alex Matt, Lawrence Matt, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Matt, Mr. and Mrs. Reynold Scheffert, Garber; Almore Ovel, Sarah Ovel and Mrs. Lydia Shirmer, Lamont; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stoeffler, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kann, Mrs. Gregor Junk, Albert and Ivanelle Pink, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berns and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fassbinder, all of Guttenberg.
