Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Leonard were held from the Witt funeral chapel at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Nov. 30. The Rev. Herbert G. Kelly officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
Mary Esther Wagner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Wagner, was born in Elkader Nov. 07, 1860, and died at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ben Leonard, Nov. 28, 1947, at the age of 87 years and 21 days. She had lived in and around Elkader all her life.
She was married to Richard Leonard March 22, 1882. They started housekeeping on the Leonard farm a mile north of Elkader, where she continued to live until January of this year, when she came to make her home with her son and daughter-in-law in Elkader. Her husband preceded her in death in June, 1922.
Mrs. Leonard had been in her usual good health until the sudden death of her son Ben on Nov. 18. Grief, coupled with the infirmities of old age and followed by pneumonia, were the contributing causes of her death.
She is survived by one granddaughter, and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ben Leonard; also two half-brothers, Charles and Fred Wagner, all of Elkader.
Preceding her in death were her husband and son Ben, a daughter Fannie, who died at the age of six years, and a son Harry, who died in infancy.
Pallbearers were: Frank Bente, Geo. Bente, Joe Hoover, Arthur Hoover, Edward Steffen, and Elmer Schulte.
