Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Zahrndt, 70, were held from the Witt Funeral chapel at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 30, to the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Paul Kitterer, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Clayton Center cemetery. The Rev. J. H. Zerhusen, pastor of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at Clayton Center had charge of the service at the grave.
Mrs. Zahrndt died Saturday, September 27th, about 6:30 o'clock in the evening, at the home of Mrs. Minnie Schmidt, where she had been making her home for the past month. She had been in good health until a few weeks ago when her condition became weaker and she suffered a heart attack which resulted in her death.
Sophia Anna Margaret Seifert, daughter of the late Rev. F. W. Seifert and his wife Katherine, nee Ruckdaeschel, was born at the family home in Clayton Center on Dec. 07, 1876. She was baptized by her father Jan. 01, 1877 and also confirmed by him in Zions Lutheran church at Clayton Center, March 30, 1890. She grew to womanhood under the Christian teaching of her parents and attended the schools in her community.
She was married to Fred W. Zahrndt of Mederville, May 17, 1899. Again her father officiated at this ceremony. For several years they lived at Clayton Center, where Mr. Zahrndt operated a creamery. They later moved to a farm near Mederville, which was their home until the spring of 1921, when they came to Elkader.
She was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church.
She is survived by one son, Earl Zahrndt of Decorah, and one grandchild, Susan Cynthia Zahrndt, Decorah, also three brothers and two sisters; namely, Fred and Otto Seifert, both of Clayton Center; E. F. Seifert, Elkader; Mrs. Leonora Glawe, Farmersburg, and Mrs. Katie Buchheim, Clayton Center.
Pallbearers were: W. W. Davidson, H. L. Meyer, Arthur J. Meyer, Carl Lenth, Elmer Schulte and Elmer Bente.
