Funeral services for Herman O. Miller, 68, who died at the home of his son Marvin in Dubuque, Saturday, April 12, following an illness of one year, were held at St. Mark's Lutheran church in Dubuque at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church in Elkader at 2:45 p.m. The Rev. Max B. Pinkert, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran church of Dubuque, officiated at both services in the absence of the Rev. Paul Kitterer, pastor of the Elkader congregation. Burial was in the East Side cemetery, Elkader.
Pallbearers were: Pearl Huggins, Joe Larson, Eiler Jensen, George L. Lemke, Frank Roehner and Chris Meyer.
Herman O. Miller was born in Germany on Feb. 26, 1879, the son of Carl and Caroline Groth Miller. He came to this country with his parents when he was four and a half years old. He was married to Miss Alma Maker at Garnavillo on March 25, 1905. They lived in Garnavillo, later moving to Elkader where he operated a transfer line for many years. The family moved to Dubuque on Oct. 01, 1942 Where Mr. Miller was employed at Farley and Loetscher's until March 1945, when ill health forced him to retire. He was a member of St. Mark's church in Dubuque.
Surviving are four sons, Harvey and Lawrence Miller, Elkader; Marvin Miller, Dubuque; and Delbert Miller, St. Olaf, one daughter, Mrs. Grover (Helen) Hedemann, Fayette; four brothers, Fred of Manilla; Earnest, Saratoga; Charles, Garnavillo; Otto Miller, Elma; and one sister, Mrs. Charles Fehlhafer, Garnavillo.
He was preceded in death by his wife in Jan. 01, 1945, also his parents, two sisters, one brother and one grandchild.
People from a distance who attended the funeral were: Fred Miller, Manilla; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Miller, Elma; Charley Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Fehlhafer, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roehner and Mrs. Alice Hedemann, all of Garnavillo; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Miller, Littleport; Mrs. Drahn and Mrs. Carl Schultz of Monona; Mr. and Mrs. Waldean Mohrman and son Waldean, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lannon all of Cascade; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Anderson, Ossian; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Lemka, Waterloo and many other relatives and friends from nearby towns.
