Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon for Mrs. John Stoops from the late home and the Frieden's Evangelical church with burial in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
The deceased, Mary L. Stoops, nee Mary L. Tinnin, was born Nov. 03, 1868, at Napa Valley, California. She died at her home here Nov. 12, 1940, at the age of 72 years and nine days.
Mrs. Stoops, whose parents went to California from New Orleans in a covered wagon, received her education in the public schools of Napa Valley and spent the greater portion of her life in California.
In 1924 she was united in marriage with John Stoops, of this place, at San Jose, Calif., and the same year she came to Elkader with her husband where she continued to live until her death.
Mrs. Stoops was enjoying average health until about eight weeks ago when she was confined to her bed with a health ailment. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Rebekah lodge.
Her death is mourned by her husband and three children: Mrs. J. J. Gannon of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. M. E. Gunby of Martinez, Calif., and Mrs. E. Baird of Oakland, Calif. Four sisters and one brother also survive, as follows: Mrs. L. C. Ewing of Newman, Calif., Mrs. Ada Hewitt of San Jose, Calif., Mrs. S. E. Akins of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. B. Crittenden of San Francisco, Calif., and William Tinnin of Newman, Calif. Three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
