Carl J. Funk of Clayton Center died at his home at 1:30 P.M. last Sunday, September 01st, from an attack of pleurisy. He had been ill only one week.
Carl J. Funk, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Funk, was born April 06th, 1856, in Hohendorf, Greifsvold, Germany. April 10th, 1882, he was united in marriage with Emelia Gruening at Lazon, Germany. That same year the couple came to the United States and settled at once in Clayton Center.
Eleven children were born to this union. Seven children, together with the widow survive. They are: Ben Funk and Mrs. Emelia Gerdes of St. Olaf; August Funk, Mrs. Lena Gossman, Mrs. Frieda Doeppke and Mrs. Pauline Lieb, all of Elkader, and Mrs. Minnie Hamilton of Dubuque.
Besides these he is survived by 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The deceased served three years in the German army before coming to this country.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon in the Zion's Lutheran church in Clayton Center and burial was made there also. The Rev. D. A. Flesner officiated.
Casketbearers were: Joe Kainz, Otto Doeppke, Otto Buchheim, John Putzier, Henry and Charles Breitsprecher.
