Clayton County Register, 21 Aug. 1940.
Clarkson F, Orvis, 49, of Billings, Mont., committed suicide at the home of his brother-in-law, Wm. Steva in Monona yesterday morning. His body was found by the latter.
The dead man had attached a hose to the exhaust of a motor car and death came from monoxide gas.
Orvis had been instructor in the Polytechnic College at Billings until he came to Monona to make his home with his brother-in-law. His wife died two years ago and it is believed that sadness over her death coupled with ill health led to his act.
Coroner Edward Rhomberg of Guttenberg and Sheriff E. W. Carlson were called in on the case but no inquest was considered necessary.
The body was taken to Earlville for burial beside the body of his wife.
