Clayton County Register, 17 July 1940

John Fredrick, four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Marlyn Palmer, died last week Tuesday evening about 9:15 while enroute to a Dubuque hospital from what has been diagnosed as glandular trouble - a very rare disease for a youngster of that age.

"Jackie" as he was popularly known, was in his usual good health Tuesday forenoon. Following dinner he was taken to the farm of his uncle, Clarence Bauer, where shortly after one o'clock he was observed to stagger. He was rushed back to Elkader for medical treatment. His stomach was first pumped as it was feared that he might have gotten some poison. His reaction, at first, was favorable but when he took a turn for the worse it was thought advisable to take him to a Dubuque hospital.

Jackie was born August 27, 1936, in Belle Plain but when only ten days of age he was brought to Elkader by his parents, and the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bauer, has been his home most of the time.

Besides his parents he is survived by one brother - Bobby - 16-months of age, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bauer and Mrs. Cora Palmer, and a host of uncles and aunts and cousins who have the sympathy of the entire community.

Relatives and friends from a distance who attended the services included: Mr. and Mrs. George Murphy and daughter Betty of Dougherty; Mrs. Cora Palmer, Mariam Whittaker, Mrs. Jess Gregory and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Palmer, all of Springville; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Palmer and daughter Mary Jean, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Anderson and daughters Naomi and Glenis, all of Cedar Rapids; Miss Evelyn Bauer, Mrs. Minnie Palmer, Norman Palmer, H. J. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Art Geiger and daughter Mariette, Wm. Becker, Joe Schiltz, daughters Rosalyn and Rita and son Billy, all of Dubuque.

Mrs. Norman Palmer, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Max Opitz, son Harry and Mrs. Mary Collins and daughter all of Strawberry Point; Mrs. Fred Hochhaus, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hochhaus and Mrs. Raymond Hochhaus of Edgewood; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tapper and daughter Maria and Mrs. Wm. Tapper of Monona; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bauer and son Joe of North Buena Vista and Miss Agnes Tujetsch of Des Moines.
