Funeral services for James M. Berry, 74, of Marquette were held Easter morning at St. Mary's Catholic church in McGregor, Rev. Father Horsfield officiating. The burial was made in St. Gabriel's cemetery at Prairie du Chien. Mr. Berry had been in failing health for over a year, but died suddenly Thursday while visiting at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. E. Kuehn at Viroqua, Wis. Mr. Berry was born at Waukesha, Wis., but came to Prairie du Chien when a small boy, later moving onto a farm in Iowa. Mr. Berry went west when a young man, working as a cowboy, ranching, working on newspapers and helping lay the first railroads in Dakota. He returned to Iowa in 1895, locating in what was then North McGregor and ran the railroad hotel and restaurant. Ten years later he built the three-story "Berry Hotel" which he operated for many years and was well-known among all the railroad men and commercial travelers of that time. Mr. Berry was always very active in Democratic politics, being one of the county leaders for many years. He was Mayor of Marquette and served on the town council a number of terms. After retiring from the hotel business, he served as toll collector on the Prairie du Chien bridge where he was working at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Sister Mary St. Virginia of Chicago and Mrs. Elizabeth Koehn of Virginia, and one son, Stanton of Sabula. One son, Donald died several years ago in South America, where he was a newspaper reporter.
