Funeral services for E. J. Opperman were held at the Emanuel's Lutheran church, Saturday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Max O. Jahr. The remains will be placed in the receiving vault until spring when burial will be made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
Ernest John Opperman, son of Henry and Wilhelmina (Bargman) Opperman, was born at Fergus Falls, Minn., on July 27, 1870, and died at his home here on Wednesday morning. When seven years of age he came with his parents to Iowa and settled near Strawberry Point. Mr. Opperman received instructions and was confirmed at the St. Sebald Lutheran church by the Rev. G. Fuehr. On January 3, 1895, he was united in marriage to Anna Allenstein by the Rev. G. Graf, then pastor of Emanuel's Lutheran church. The 45th wedding anniversary was celebrated last January. After their marriage they farmed a few years near Lamont, after which he entered the implement business at Lamont and later Strawberry Point. Later he was engaged in trucking and in recent years has been inactive owing to his health which has been failing him for the last 13 years.
Surviving are his wife and three children, Mrs. Carl (Edna) Wagner, and Mrs. Otto (Leta) Gipper, both of Oelwein and Ernest of Popejoy; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; also two brothers and one sister: Herman of Cedar Rapis, Henry J., of Strawberry Point and Mrs. Hannah Allenstein of Washington, D.C.
