Clayton County Register, 06 Mar. 1940.

Funeral services were held last week Monday for Charles Zittergruen, Sr., in the Lutheran church at Elkport and burial was made in the Mt. Harmony cemetery, the Rev. Steege of Garnavillo officiating.

Charles Zittergruen, son of Carl and Regina Zittergruen, was born in Pommerania, Germany, March 09, 1855. When he was 14 years of age he accompanied his parents to this country, settling in Clayton county on a farm near Garnavillo. It was here where he spent the days of his youth helping his father in farming.

In 1883 he entered the bonds of marriage with Lena Brandenburg of Garnavillo. To this union 12 children were born, two daughters and 10 sons. Until 20 years ago he followed the occupation of farming, at first near Garnavillo and later at Garber. The past 20 years he has resided in Garber, taking active part in civic affairs of the community, and serving on the town council for 19 years.

Throughout his life he was deeply interested in his church, having been an active member and serving as treasurer of the Lutheran church in Elkport for many years.

As a whole the departed enjoyed good health. During the past few weeks he had not been in the best of health but his condition did not become critical until about a week ago. He died on Friday afternoon, February 23, attaining an age of 84 years, 11 months and 15 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Adam Thein of Elkport and Mrs. Norman Nichols of Greeley; eight sons, Edward and Arnold of Elkport, Herman, Charles, Jr., Emil, Louis, William and Elmer of Garber; and 25 grandchildren. Two sons, one brother, and two sisters preceded him in death.
