VOLGA: Mrs. Sarah Jane Boleyn Hummel was born near Pittsburgh, Penn., on March 04, 1854. On Dec. 04, 1872, she was united in marriage to Lewis Hummel, by the Rev. D. P. Lowe. To this union were born nine children. Her husband and four sons have preceded her in death.
She united with the Goodwill church at Wadena during her girlhood. She lived a peaceful and uncomplaining life, always striving to share and lighten the burdens of others. She was a devoted and loving mother, sparing herself no effort in giving a helping hand to all who might need.
Mrs. Hummel passed away at the home of her youngest son in Strawberry Point at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 18 days. She leaves to mourn her departure five children: Mrs. Arthur Herman of Elgin, Leonard Hummel of Wadena, James Hummel and Mrs. William Berger of Elkader, and Clark Hummel of Strawberry Point; also a sister, Mrs. Jesse Poor, of Wadena. In addition, there are 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nephews and nieces, three daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon of this week in the Volga Presbyterian church, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Russel P. Nelson. Three solos were sung by Mrs. Russell Nelson: "The Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden," and "Good Night and Good Morning." Interment was made in the cemetery at Illyria.
