Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Oelwein and Farmersburg for Mrs. Bert Mathews, who had died at her home in Oelwein last Friday. The Oelwein services were held in the home, while those in Farmersburg were held in the Methodist church with burial in the Farmersburg cemetery. The Rev. P. Kitterer of Elkader officiated at the Farmersburg services.
The deceased, Mrs. Anna Mathews, daughter of Edward Looby and his wife Margaret, nee Barnum, was born at Farmersburg, Iowa, on the 09th day of June, 1878, and died Sept. 22, 1939, at Oelwein, reaching the age of 61 years, three months and 13 days.
Mrs. Mathews spent most of her life in Farmersburg. In the year 1900 she was united in marriage to Bert Mathews. Mr. and Mrs. Mathews made their home in Elkader for a few years, and for the past 15 years they have resided in Oelwein.
Four children were born to the aforenamed union. Two children preceded their mother in death. The two surviving children are Vincent Mathews and Amy Ramsay, both of Oelwein.
Mrs. Mathews spent most of her time in her home taking care of her loved ones. She was a member of the Presbyterian church.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, the aforementioned children, three sisters, Theresa Oelke of National, Mabel Englehardt of Springville, and Agnes Arverson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers, Charlie and Richard Looby of Luana and Farmersburg respectively; one granddaughter, Marjorie, of Oelwein. A brother William, and sister Josey Serry preceded their sister in death.
