Clayton County Register, 28 June 1939.

VOLGA: Rachel Alice Pilkington, daughter of John and Elizabeth Stewart Pilkington, was born near Elkport, Aug. 06, 1862, and departed this life at her home in Volga, June 20, 1939, aged 76 years, 10 months and 14 days. She grew to womanhood in the Elkport neighborhood, attending the country school and church and entering into the other activities of the day.

On Feb. 23, 1887, she was united in marriage to Charles E. Lovett at the parental home near Elkport. The young couple made their home for the first 12 years of their married life in their home community. In 1899 they moved to Volga, where they have since resided.

To this union were born two children, a daughter Ruth (Mrs. Herbert McChesney). and a son Owen. It was the parent's sad misfortune to see them both pass this life to the life beyond, the son on October 02, 1928, and the daughter on July 31, 1935. These losses have saddened the later years.

Early in life Mrs. Lovett united with the church. For at least nine years she was the superintendent of the Methodist Sunday school in Volga, taking a personal interest. The Ladies Aid and the Foreign Missionary society were also dear to her. She was one of the charter members of the latter organization. She remained an official in these two organizations up to within a few months of her death.

Mrs. Lovett was one of a family of five children, two brothers and one sister preceding her in death, and one brother, Charles Pilkington, of Westerville, Ohio, survives. There is also her husband to whom our hearts go out in sympathy today, and one son-in-law, Herbert McChesney, who has since the death of his wife, Ruth Lovett, made his home with them; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Owen Lovett, her two children, Ruth and Gene, of Madison, S.D., and several nieces and nephews, besides a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. E. J. Starr. A former pastor, S. L. Bear, of Marion, offered prayer. Three hymns were sung by a quartet composed of Jennie Susie, Freda Adams, Harry Boleyn and Clarence Kohls, accompanied by Mrs. Peter Myers.

Casket bearers were William M. Ewing, Ernest Smith, William Hoskyn, Ben Roys, Frank Oldfather, and Walter Everitt.

Burial was in Hillcrest cemetery.
