Clayton Count Register, 05 Oct. 1938.
A. R. Ernst, 48, a farmer living west of Elkader, was trampled to death last Friday evening in his barnyard by a Holstein bull. The animal attacked him while he was doing his chores.
Answering her husband's call for help, Mrs. Ernst ran to his aid, armed with a pitchfork, but she was unable to drive the animal away and might also have been killed had not neighbors come to her rescue. Mr. Ernst lived but a short time after the attack.
Surviving, besides the widow, are three children. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Highland church. Burial was made in Sioux City, his former home, Tuesday.
