Clayton County Register, 24 Aug. 1938.

R. H. Hagensick, owner of the City Drug store here, died suddenly at his home last Monday evening at 11:15, following a stroke which attacked him the evening before. His illness and death were a shock to the community.

Raymond Henry Hagensick was born here in Elkader on June 30, 1882, the son of Henry H. and Sarah Jane (Dresser) Hagensick. At the time of his death he had reached the age of 56 years, one month and 22 days.

He completed his preparatory education here in the local schools and then graduated as a registered pharmacist from the Highland Park School of Pharmacy in Des Moines, after which he returned to Elkader to continue his profession in the local drug store, which was then owned by his father, the late H. H. Hagensick.

Following the death of his father he took over the ownership, not only of the drug store, but the Bayless hotel as well, and immediately set about improving both businesses. While Mr. Hagensick was not particularly active in a public way in this community, he always supported any movement which he felt was for the best interest of the community - supported it financially as well as morally. Under his ownership the local hotel became favorably known over a wide circle in this section of the state.

Mr. Hagensick disposed of the hotel property only recently.

October 01, 1907, in Dubuque, the deceased was united in marriage with Alta Eckheart, and Elkader has always been the home of the Hagensick family. Four children were born to this union, three of whom survive, namely, Mrs. Pansy Chilson of Chicago, Harold and Rose LaVon, at home; one son, Lester, died in infancy Dec. 23, 1910. Mrs. Hagensick preceded her husband in death on August 24, 1934 - almost four years to the day.

Mr. Hagensick was affiliated with only one lodge - Modern Woodmen - in which he held membership at the time of his death. He will be missed both in the home and in local business circles.

All local business places will be closed tomorrow afternoon during the services, which will be held at the late home at 1:30 and then at the Friedens Evangelical church, with burial in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.

Casketbearers will be Albert Allen, John Bahr, James Staub, Earl Peake, W. W. Davidson and P. J. Hyde.
