GUTTENBERG: Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon for Arno J. Schmalfeld, 46-year-old World War veteran. Rev. W. J. F. Adix, pastor of St. John's Lutheran church, will officiate at the church at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in the cemetery at Clayton Center.
Mr. Schmalfeld had been in ill health for several years and died in the veterans' hospital at Des Moines, Wednesday morning, following an operation. He had been receiving treatment at the hospital since June 13.
He was with one of the first detachments to be taken overseas after the United States entered the World War, and served throughout thee conflict, being at the front when the armistice was signed.
Born on the family farm, near Farmersburg, on April 07, 1892, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Schmalfeld. On June 03, 1920, he was married to Miss Mahala Breisprecker of St. Olaf. He followed his father in possession of the farm and the young couple made their home there until two years ago, when failing health caused him to sell the farm and move to Guttenberg.
Besides hiss wife, he is survived by five daughters, Darleen, Evelyn, Lagona, Dorothy and Cloy Ann, all at home; one brother, Elmer, of Farmersburg, and an adopted sister, Mrs. Frederick Lendt, of Sleepyeye, Minn.
