Hiram Perry Marlett was born in Canada Oct. 10, 1849 [sic]. In early manhood he came to the United States and in 1861 when the call was made for soldiers to put down the Rebellion he enlisted in the Union Army and faithfully served for nearly four years. Four months of the time he endured the horrors of Libby Prison.

After the war he went to Beloit, Wis., where in 1866 he was married to Udella Artlip who preceded her husband in death only about two months.

Of the seven children born to this home, four survive, George of Oakville, Ia., John of Bettendorf, Ia., and Wm and F.L. of National.

Mrs. Susan Brown of Alma, Wis., died two days after her father passed away.

For some months the father had lived with his son Wm. where he was tenderly cared for by loving hands.

31 grand children and 2 great grand-children also survive.

Owing to his advanced age of 87 years, 4 mos. and 25 days, his death March 5th was not unexpected and came as a sweet release from the infirmities which included blindness. He has gone to receive his reward. The march of another soldier is over, his battles are fought, his victories won.

The funeral services were held in the home Thursday afternoon March 8, conducted by Rev. C.A. Peddicord, and the interment in the cemetery at National.

~North Iowa Times, Thursday, March 15, 1917; pg 5

Notes: The DOB given in the obituary is obviously incorrect, as he would have been too young to have enlisted in 1861. His age at death of 87+ yrs. would make his birth in 1829. Some census records (1880, 1900, 1910) give birth place as Ohio, rather than Canada. See the Civil War Honor Roll in Military Records, this website, for interesting information about his CW service.
