L. W. Thompson, cashier of the Farmersburg Savings Bank for the past 30 years, died Thursday morning, Dec. 23, at the Grandview hospital in La Crosse, Wis., following a heart attack.

Mr. Thompson was born in Wagner township, Clayton county, on April 06, 1873. He was the youngest son of William and Barbro (Lunda) Thompson, both natives of Nummedal, Norway, and pioneer settlers in Iowa. In 1904 Mr. Thompson was married to Retelia Thovson, who was also born and reared in Wagner township.

He acquired his early education in the district schools of Clayton county and later took a business course in the Decorah Business Institute, from which institution he received a diploma in 1894. From that time until 1902 his time was given at varying intervals to farm work, to the buying and shipping of livestock, to serving as assistant postmaster and to clerking in general merchandise stores.

In the autumn of 1902 Mr. (next few words blurred) at Farmersburg and became associated with his brother Herbran in the livestock business. In the spring of 1904 he removed to the homestead farm, which he managed for the next four years. In the spring of 1908 he accepted the position of cashier of the Farmersburg Savings bank, in which office he continued until the time of his death.

His efficient administration of the affairs of the bank during the difficult depression years won the respect and admiration of all his associates. Besides his banking interests, he was actively engaged in many other public affairs, holding various offices and exerting his influence in many ways in the interests of the community. He was an untiring and conscientious worker, faithfully performing any duties intrusted to him, and willingly giving his counsel and assistance to the many who sought it. He will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends and business associates.

He leaves four daughters, Blanche of Red Wing, Minn.; Joyce and Lillian of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. F. A. Moser of Farmersburg; a brother, Herbran, and a sister, Rachel, both of Farmersburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, is parents, four brothers, and one sister.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Norway Lutheran church with the Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiating. Burial was in the Norway cemetery with the following acting as pallbearers: J. H. Buckman, Otto Fuelling, Grover Miller, C. H. Oelke, Ed Johnson, Otto Kjosa, Fred Tielbar, and Albert Huckstadt. Honorary pallbearers were: Gottlieb Zurcher, Fred Miller, H. A. Oelke, W. C. Oelke, all of Farmersburg; C. F. Murphy of Elkader, and members of the Clayton County Bankers Association.
