Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 05th, at the late home and from the Norway Lutheran church in Wagner township for Mrs. Ellen M. Johnson, one of the oldest members of that church and recognized as one of the oldest residents of Clayton county.

Mrs. Johnson enjoyed excellent health until her 97tth birthday. Since last spring, she has failed gradually and death came peacefully, at 1:50 Friday morning, Sept. 03rd, at the age of 97 years, 11 months and 13 days. Besides her daughter, Mrs. O. T. Olson, she leaves to mourn her death her son-in-law, O. T. Olson; two step-daughters, Mrs. Carrie Myren of Churches Ferry, N. Dak., and Mrs. Racheal Anderson of Canton, S. Dak., and one step-son, John J. Johnson of Palo Alto, Calif., five grand-children, Glen of Elkader, Theodore of Hialeah Park, Florida, Mrs. Carl Schmidt of Decorah, Mrs. Clarence Tesch of Rudd, and Alvin at home; three great-grandchildren, Renald and H. Jeannine Schmidt and Gary Lee Tesch.

Three Step-daughters, Mrs. Louisa Ellerton, Mrs. Maria Larson, and Mrs. Olive Hanson preceded her in death.

Mrs. Ellen Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nielson, was born near Konigsberg, Norway, on September 21, 1839, Near here she spent most of her childhood. In the spring of 1868 she sailed to America. The trip across the Atlantic required five weeks at that time,

She spent the summer with friends at Rock Prairie, Wis., and came to Clayton county in the fall. Here she met Gilbert Johnson, whom she married in February 1870.

To this union were born two children, a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. O. T. Olson, with whom she lived after the death of her husband, September 29, 1899.

Casket bearers were, Ray Rierson, Odden Juvick, Henry Reierson, Olvin Johnson, Burton Juvick and Calvin Weymouth. Burial was made in the family lot in the Norway cemetery.
